Keep your electric toothbrush clean with a simple routine
Cleaning an electric toothbrush does not need to be complicated. Rinse the brush head after use, follow the manufacturer's cleaning instructions, and allow the toothbrush to dry between uses.
1. Rinse the brush head after brushing
Rinse the head thoroughly under running water to remove toothpaste and debris. If the head detaches, remove it only as described in the product manual.
2. Clean the handle carefully
Follow the manufacturer's instructions for cleaning the handle and charging area. If permitted, wipe the exterior with a suitable damp cloth. Do not immerse electrical components or charging bases unless the manual explicitly says this is safe.
3. Store it upright and let it air-dry
The American Dental Association recommends rinsing toothbrushes thoroughly after use, storing them upright, and allowing them to air-dry. A wet toothbrush kept in a closed container can encourage microbial growth compared with one left exposed to air. Read the ADA toothbrush-care guidance.
4. Replace worn brush heads
Inspect the bristles regularly. The ADA recommends replacing toothbrushes about every three to four months, or sooner if the bristles become visibly frayed. For an electric toothbrush, also follow the replacement interval specified by its manufacturer.
5. Avoid unapproved cleaning methods
Do not assume household cleaners, high heat, a dishwasher, or a microwave are suitable for your device. The ADA advises against microwaving or putting toothbrushes in a dishwasher because high heat may damage them. Use only methods allowed by the manufacturer.
6. Do you need a toothbrush sanitizer?
A sanitizer is not a substitute for rinsing and air-drying. The ADA notes that evidence about toothbrush-sanitizing devices is limited. Do not assume a UV device guarantees sterilization or a particular health outcome without product-specific evidence.
7. Keep up with your daily oral-care routine
Cleaning the device is only one part of oral care. The NHS recommends brushing twice daily for about two minutes with fluoride toothpaste. Read the NHS guidance on keeping teeth clean.
